Agatha Ruiz de la Prada: Finally School Teaches Me Something Useful

Top set in languages, I is. Surprisingly, top set in English too.
My Spanish teacher is pretty cool, she had a crush on Robert Pattinson (this was cool until I went off of the Twilight Saga say...two years ago?).
Now she's even more cool as we are learning about fashion in my Spanish lessons.
For homework we had to write a paragraph about a slightly eccentric, in my opinion, Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, using three tenses. I literally just finished so I feel like I should refer to you what I have just learnt; I have never really researched into Agatha or really heard of her before my mum brought an ARP lip salve back for me from Italy.

Agatha Ruiz de la Prada shows seem to be avant-garde without meaning to. Here are some repeated features that plagued her Primavera/Verano 2011 show at Madrid Fashion Week:

  • Turbans
  • Rayas multicolores (multicoloured stripes)
  • Lunares rosa (pink polkadots)
  • Patrones de innumerables de corazon. Porque la corazon es la logotipo de ARP. (Numerous patterned hearts. Because the heart is ARP's logo)
  • Una vestido de calabaza (a pumpkin dress)
  • Los trajes fueron vibrantes (vibrant outfits)
  • Tiene zapatos de tacon alto con un corazon para el talon.(She had heart shaped high heels)
  • Y cuadros, cuadros, cuardos! (and chequers, chequers, chequers!)
Check it out for yourselves and yes, I know, my Spanish es crapola!

And there's Aggy herself in the weird plastic ball dress that reminds me of those kiddies ball pits...However out of all the craziness the craziest thing is how happy and smiley and healthy the models all look, except this girl...

The poor model is being swallowed up by a beanbag!!

Check out more crazy at Agatha Ruiz de la Prada's official blog. Enjoy!

Go-To Fashion Blogs

Okay everyone has their favourite go-to blog's right? So I am going to share a few of my favourites with you:

  • The Sartorialist. A no-brainer really - this blog is beautiful. The photography is outstanding and I seem to love every shot! From Paris to Milan, New York to London, these guys really get around and find some stunning fashion gems.
  • Fashion Toast: Stylish outfits, an insiders look into the events to be at, hot places in the city and the best of the seasons most wanted. All of this written in the laid-back blog of model, Rumi Neely.
  • Go Fug Yourself: Because Fugly is the New Pretty: A blog that take the complete Michael out of celebrity fashion fugs, lets just say I've nearly wet myself laughing at this blogs witty posts.

Got a favourite blog? Shout it!!

Battle of the 'It Bags': Satchels

The Proenza Schouler PS1 satchels seem to be slung over every young fashionistas shoulder at the moment. With double straps this beautiful bag seems prepared to take even the heavy workload of a stylish commuter.

Prepare to ditch your old scratched PS1 to upgrade to the new addition to the collection: the PS11.

Proenza Schouler PS11

Replacing the PS1's double strap opening is a rather retro looking buckle clasp, making this desirable bag tastefully old-school. These bags remind me off S/S coveted Celine Classic Box Bags except Proenza Schouler style; So many small details like the two bottom buckles so that you can adjust the straps depending on how much your carrying, back zips and a magnetic clasp at the flap. This bags way edgier than it's sister, not to forget less manly. For my personal taste the buckles galore is just too much; my style is more modern, minimalistic and simplistic. On the other hand, Celine's use of popping colours are perfect for me; a simple charcoal blazer, a black shift and boots teamed with the Classic Box Bag in Orange will suit my laid back style but also meets the needs of those who like more busy, detailed garments. So for me the Celine satchel wins the battle of the It Bags, but for others this might not be the case...

Balenciaga's Robot Heels

Balenciaga's Lego-ish heels are pretty awesome to look at; to some they're fugly and others pure genius. Really, I think people are going to agree to disagree about this set of clompers for some good time, at least Beyonce and Kanye West digg them. However these Balenciaga's I do like:

Balenciaga's F/W Collection 2010 by Pierre Hardy

Yes, they're crazy.
Yes, they're obscene.

But these architectural shoes are unbelievable! They're modern yet old with the main blue mimic crocodile skin reminding me of an old pair of grannies loafers - similar to those with the tassel's. The chunky heel causes me to visualise glass skyscrapers. I well and truly adore them. Futuristic and chic at the same time? Job well done, Pierre Hardy. Yet again, you either love 'em or hate 'em as with the bold Robot Shoes. If I was a rich girl...

Designers/ Hussein Chalayan

Is it humanly possible to hit a rounders ball at your own head? I would think not, until I did.
Is it therefore humanly possible to have not of heard of the genius that is Hussein Chalayan? Sadly I think it might be. I myself find it sad that some have not been knowingly exposed to this guys genius, he is the technological designer of the future, using insane graphical designs,  lasers and whatnot. Perhaps you've seen this dress?

This probably is one of the coolest dresses to grace the runway. This high-tech dress features a light display system within the dress structure so that the pattern portrayed on the textiles can be changed.

Another famous Chalayan creation was sported by a now huge pop star, she has probably shocked you if your not a fan of her work, or perhaps you've loved this stars fierce confidence and outgoing style.

Nope? How about now?

Yes, Lady Gaga proves a huge Chalayan fan. This girl does have good taste in my opinion (i.e. her love affair with McQueen) even if it roams on the costume-y side of avant-garde. Check it out.

With so many crazy looks and futuristic inspirations, it often leaves me wondering whether Hussein Chalayan can produce work that's wearable!! Obviously he can; he is after all a Brit/Turk fashion genius. Here is the Hussein Chalayan Autumn Winter Mirage Collection. Slouchy blazers and skirts with thigh-high slits are a must apparently. His inspiration for this Collection seems to be the American Hurricane Ivan and Mexico. Frankly I love the unconventional mix. Enjoy!

Maja Mayskär

Another beautiful new face that I came across on Maja is already signed with IMG thanks to her mother agency Stokholmsgruppen - evidently this girl is going to be big.

I am in love with her lips and those piercing blue pools of eyes!! She's definatly a very promising model as she's been booked with high-rollers like Acne, Gant and Dagmar...Elle booked her twice within a short period of time. She even has her own Perfume with her face plastered on the box: Maja Mayskär - Body Splash with Stokholmsgruppen Cosmetics.

At 16 years of age in 2009, Maja won the 'Super Model 400' competition out of over 6000 applicants.

According to Swedish 'Chic Magazine', Maja Mayskär is the new supermodel.

And here I was thinking the supermodel was dead along with the Size Zero...

Would You Fake It?

Now I myself would never buy a fake designer handbag, the whole idea of stealing another's design and name, also their logo which they've worked so hard to be recognised for, makes me feel so sympathetic to the designers.

My inspiration behind this post is just to voice that fact that fakes seem to be everywhere...

So this October I went on a Flotilla Holiday with one of my best friends to sail around the Greek Islands. A beautiful place Corfu Island is but it seems so littered with decrepit buildings and poverty. Even with all the poverty they still manage to sell fakes. At one of the ports along the way the harbour was covered with stores, in one, shelves upon shelves of designer knock-off's. I mean c'mon!! A Tous tote bag??? Tous aren't even famous for their handbags!! A clear plastic Dior rucksack, an ugly Chanel denim thing - god it was horrific- your typical Louis Vuitton fakes and your Prada hobo's. Most of these fakes could easily pass as the real deal if only the quality was better(e.g. the leather and interior). There was one exception -the Chanel bag. As if Chanel would design anything as grimy as that.

Well that's my rant over. The thing that surprised me most was the fact that all of the logos were identical to the originals, whereas in major cities the vendors have fake logos like instead of Gucci interlocking G's they're like Q's or something.

So, would you fake it?

Jourdan and Chanel

The two main modelling idols in my life: Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman.
(Left to Right) Chanel Iman & Jourdan Dunn wearing Vera Wang glass jewelled necklaces.
Jourdan: My first discovery of this beauty was in one of my first ever Elle UK Magazines in one of their special Runway issue. Flicking through the glossy pages of a magazine that had become my own personal Bible, I came to the Runway pages of Paris Fashion Week. After gazing at beautiful gowns and cute minimalistic blazers I continued to the pages focused purely on Beauty a promotional page for L'Oreal Paris. Showcasing clear smooth skin, nude pinkish lips and bare long-lashed eyes - no wonder she became my idol. I didn't have a clue at that point who this stunner was but I sure did buy the L'Oreal Rouge Infallible lipstick she was promoting.

I sort of pushed this nameless model to the back of my head, to rediscover her at a later date whilst flicking curiously through modelling agencies' websites. My favourite seemed to be Storm Model Management. Here I found her - bubbly, energetic and ever so dynamic - Jourdan Dunn.

Chanel: Now I hadn't heard much of Chanel before buying the Teen Vogue Handbook which gave me an insight to many jobs in the fashion industry, one of which was modelling, featuring Chanel Iman. Here we are given a look into the hectic schedules of a model.

This adorable girl has walked for so many huge fashion houses and graced the covers of Vogue, I-D, Harpers Bazaar...the list goes on. In 2009 she even walked for Victoria's Secret and promoted their new line of the time "Nakeds". Now in 2010 her contract has switched from Ford Models, which she's been modelling with since the young age of 12, to IMG Models. This 20 year old model has a huge future ahead, surely a supermodel to be.

Lanvin for H&M

Sooo...who likes the line? I sure do! Lanvin have truly out done themselves with this collection: there's a little bit of everything for everyones tastes! Ruffles top of most of the designs like this banana yellow strapless dress, simple design but the colour brings an otherwise dull dress to life.

By far my favourite look of all has to be this red sleeveless dress and sophisticated clutch. The shoes too are a must.

And finally this. I absolutley adore this faux fur jacket; it could easily be worn dressed up or casual. This line is sure to go down a treat. This model off duty proves it.

Tah-tah et mwah!

So I saw the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 today. What a gripping film! While on the subject of Potter, don't you just love Emma Watson's new 'do. A beautiful crop cut, this style really does suit her unlike many celebs who've tried it on for size. Emma truely is a wonderful girl; both on and off film her personality is very plesant and charming-just as her co-star Daniel Radcliff. On Pudsey's Children in Need two twin sisters, one of which was disabled, were introduced to the stars and they were so delightful and friendly. I hope this generation of chavs and thugs will turn into charming stars of tomorrow. What a brilliant pair of role models! And I must say...Daniel really rocks a bra...

Irina Nikolaeva

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I'm big on modelling and the hype surrounding models. This star is the absolutely stunning Irina Nikolaeva.

Images courtesy of

She's simply stunning. Born in Moscow, Irina has modelled for many major Russian publications - unsurprising with her stunning feline looks and expressive eyes. I'm sure that Irina will be hitting the big European designer house runways any time soon.

This is Rachel.
I am one of many fashion obsessed teens out there and I'm using this Blog to express myself.
Don't be scared.
I will try my best to balance my pretty GCSE hectic school life with my passion fuelled fashion one by posting inspiration as often as I can to you guys.

About me: I love Hussain Chalayan and his amazing graphical based designs, I love The Fashion Spot which I was accepted to today! My family are adorable, my friends more so. I went to my first fashion show at 6 years old. Hell if I know why, I asked my parents and even they don't know why.

I'm determined to become something big in the Fashion Industry, from modelling to editorial, if you don't believe that it's possible that I take the industry and my future seriously, get this, I already know what college I'm planning on going to.

I love Italy. It's a second home to me. Celebrity spotting, watching Chanel film outside of their Firenzi store, searching for vintage Burberry shirts in stores down the cob-belled side roads. What's not to like?

I love London, it's possibly the thing that inspires me most in life; the bustling bridges squashed up with commuters, taking the train, walking down Oxford Street and finding my way to Liberty's to stare at the beautiful draped dresses and smelling the thick scent of Italian Leather.

I hope to bring this to you, where ever you are. To share a little bit of me - are you willing to share too?
